I downloaded steam via the app center but everytime I try to open it, the icon appears on the dock then just disappears.

Okay so I ran steam using terminal and got this
    Code (Text):
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
xz: (stdin): File format not recognized
    tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
find: ‘/home/jacob/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime’: No such file or directory
    so I fixed it with
    Code (Text):
    mkdir /home/$USER/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime
It's working now lol but I'm keeping this up for other users to see

I've been searching for an hour now because I had the very same problem of Steam not starting. This did not fix my issue but lead me into the right folder to update it manually.

This kind of issue is the very reason why Linux is such a failure for the mass. Something as popular as Steam isn't even installing properly for lots of us. Sometimes it works, such as with my older Elementary Loki, just typed sudo apt-get install Steam and Voila! Some other time, no matter if you go through the terminal, the synaptic packet manager or the software center nothing will ever work despite the tons of shady lines of command you will paste from users online trying to make you install some library or xfonts yadda yadda. On Windows it simply works and this simplicity is why, despite not being safe, Windows is still the most convenient way to use a computer and by a light year. You can install a printer in the blink of an eye if you're lucky, or you can invest three hours of your life a year later on the same OS and it will never work, that is Linux for me and this despite being on it after almost three years I still struggled an hour to make Steam even install just now.

Thanks for the heads-up btw, it reminded me that Steam was in a hidden folder.
