    Hi all,

I have been experimenting with a number of linux distributions lately and have decided to settle with EOS for my home laptop. I am impressed with the performance of this OS and would like to install it on an external HDD which I can boot from on any computer. The reason for this is that I travel alot in my job and am a keen photographer, so while I am travelling I would like to process my photos in my raw editor of choice DARKTABLE.

So I watched a number of tutorials and felt pretty well prepaired to install to my WD 500GB external USB 3.0 HDD.

Here is the process I followed:

    1. booted as normal and used gparted to remove all partitions from the WD HDD
    2. closed gparted, shutdown and booted into live session from dvd with WD HDD plugged in
    3. Selected install os
    4. when asked where I wanted to install I selected something else
    5. in the free space of my WD HDD i created partitions /boot @ 300mb, /home @ 200gb, / @ 20gb and swap at 10gb
    6. selected to install the bootloader to the /boot partition of my WD HDD
    7. installed

Upon reboot I could boot from the external drive. Great! However I could no longer boot my laptop as normal, it simply gave me a grub prompt!

I fixed this problem by going into the live session again and installing and running boot-repair.

Now I can boot the laptop as normal, but I CANT boot from my external WD HDD (. My external drive shows up at boot options, but selecting just results in a flashing cursor!

Any help in getting my external hdd bootable again would be greatly appreciated.

Regards from the ALPS and many thanks in advance.
    Martin

strange, if I remove the HDD from the laptop then I can boot from the external HDD. Put the internal drive back in and no chance to boot from the external drive. The plot thickens........
