I’m a longtime macOS user considering a complete switch to ElementaryOS. I need to check out a properly functional version of ElementaryOS, in order to test (A.) if I can recreate my workflow using software available on Linux, and (B.) whether I feel satisfied with the overall quality of the ElementaryOS experience. For now, I would like to try ElementaryOS on one of my Apple computers. I do not own any other hardware. That being said, should my Macs refuse to play well with ElementaryOS, I might have to find some other way to test this Linux distro properly. I want to give it a fair shot. The system I would like to try ElementaryOS on is not too fresh… will I still be able to give ElementaryOS a proper go? My workflow is rather undemanding: PDFs, Dropbox, web browser, text editor, citation manager, this kind of stuff. Specs: Apple MacBook 13" (Mid-2010) (aka: MacBook7,1) Core 2 Duo (P8600) 2.4GHz 8 GB RAM (2x4) DDR3 1067 MHz NVIDIA GeForce 320M HDD (5400 RPM) Hitachi AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n) Broadcom Full specs: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...rbonate-unibody-mid-2010-specs.html#macspecs1 To clarify, I know that I can technically run eOS on this machine. The question is, how well? I'm looking for some hardware-specific feedback regarding running eOS on this or similar setup. I have little in terms of a point of reference when it comes to Linux. Thus, I want to make sure I'm testing the usability of eOS on hardware that can run it relatively well (what an experienced user would consider normal functioning).
I'm going to bump this old thread, as these old MacBooks were popular and I'm sure OutmealDurkheim isn't the only one wondering. I'm currently typing this on a very similar model, the late 2009 Macbook, running Loki. As far as I know, my MacBook has a slightly lower processor speed, but no other major differences from the 2010 model (although this one has been upgraded with an SSD; an easy and highly recommended modification). Loki runs quite well on this, better I'd say than Ubuntu 18.04, which seemed rather sluggish. It also has pretty good trackpad drivers; I don't find myself accidentally moving the cursor while typing the way I was with Watt OS. The only real "issue" that I've come across is getting it to sync with the Magic Mouse, although I haven't put any real effort into it as I find the mouse uncomfortable. The team behind Elementary seems to like Apple, so I'd imagine there's a way to do it. I'll try Juno on it eventually.
Hi, I'm currently running a MBP (mid-2010) which has gotten pretty sluggish using macOS. Read that elementary was pretty good for this, but wasn't able to figure out a good way to install it - most of the tutorials online all expect a more recent Macbook version. @King Riffle do you mind sharing your install process and any tips? I'm planning to eventually dual boot macOS/elementary.
I'm writing on this post with my Macbook White and EOS Juno, latest macbook white sold before the macbook air sostitution, after all macbook are only alluminium case. this is the last model with white pvc case. All works fine!
