There is a similar problem to yours in this thread on Ubuntu: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+question/230429 The relevant part, as below, solved the problem for the poster. Essentially you will remove and reinstall Software Centre. I am assuming you have tried the obvious stuff, like logging out to check if Software Centre works in another account and Rebooting. sudo apt-get --purge remove software-center sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get install software-center sudo apt-get autoremove Then retry

Are you using an up-to-date install of Elementary OS, or are you still using an upgraded beta version? I have previously had problems with Elementary like you are having, when using a Beta software. Just upgrading it did not make it the same as the release build.

As it is a recent installation that is broken, probably the best thing to do is to reinstall. It is difficult to unpick the various dependencies that may be broken from trying to install and un-install other desktop environments. Your laptop has both a hard drive bay and an msata bay both of which are easily accessed. When trying out new distros/DEs, which is half the fun of Linux, I would use a cheap msata drive and keep my default installation safe on the other drive or vice versa. I do the same thing on my Lenovo X220. That way you can experiment as much as you like, but still have a safe operating system to fall back on.
