I am running ElementaryOS 64 in a Virtualbox 5.0 VM. For the most part, this is a very nice, very simple system to use. But I am experiencing intermittent/random/? crashes.

    Code (Text):
    root@elementaryos:/var/log# uname -a
    Linux elementaryos 3.19.0-56-generic #62~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 11 11:03:15 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
When the system crashes, the screen locks up, goes blank, and the keyboard and mouse do not respond. I even tried setting up an ssh session to remain logged in from the host until the VM crashes, thinking maybe I could still take a look at the system from the command line (i.e., maybe it hadn't really crashed). But the ssh session had been terminated by the time I noticed the VM had crashed (I leave these VMs and host on 24/7, so I might not be there when it happens).

Sometimes, when it has crashed and I have been working in the VM, the whole screen just seems to freeze up. The mouse stops working and the keyboard does not respond. The screen would remain intact, not doing anything.

In another thread, you advised the user who was also experiencing crashes that 2.4GB is not enough memory. I have given this VM 1GB. I have another Ubuntu VM (12.04) and it does not have this problem, maybe because it has 2GB. Realistically, how much memory should I expect to hand over to ElementaryOS? I have given the VM 1.5 CPUs (Thuban X6), and while it is running, it runs fine it seems to me.

I have about a half-dozen VMs running, doing various things. I might be able to steal some memory from some of them. I have 12GB on this machine, and if I weren't so cheap, maybe I'd spring for another 4GB memory.

Mine freezes randomly as well, and it is my main OS. Even though I really like elementary, I am to the point I am ready to switch to something else because this is just so annoying. Sometimes I can go for weeks with no problems, but sometimes It can happen multiple times in a day. It seems like this has been an issue with elementary (searching in google). I really wish it would get fixed. But it does not look like it will.

Here is an update. I've been running for about a month without mishap, but while it is a nice environment, it is also veeeeeeery slow.

I tried enabling the 3D in the VM, but it doesn't seem to make any difference in responsiveness or video playback; the videos are herky-jerky, not playing smoothly and freezing the picture every few seconds.

When I run htop, I see that "gala" is the top runner most of the time. I left the htop window open while watching video, but unfortunately, the latency does not allow me to switch the view to the htop window quickly enough to see the behavior in real time. (I'll keep experimenting with this.)

Just as a point of comparison, I note that I am getting these intermittent crashes on my Ubuntu 12.04 upgraded Ubuntu 14.04. Since elementaryOS is an Ubuntu variant, it could be that whatever was causing these crashes may have been corrected at certain points after 14.04 was released (elementary seems to be version 15 or so?). But I am not having crashes on elementary lately, just excruciating latency, which is just painful when trying to view videos.
