I have a passing acquaintance with Linux; I've installed Linux Mint (in VirtualBox). I've been intrigued by elementary OS, so I wanted to try it out (in VirtualBox). However, after I installed it, I could not get it to recognize any screen resolution other than 640x480. This is a completely unusable resolution. I tried to get an answer at StackExchange here, but the conversation has stalled. Nobody seems to have an answer nor understand what is going on. I'm running VirtualBox 5.0.26 and I'm trying to install Freya. FYI, I did not have this problem with Linux Mint. Right out of the box, it ran perfectly.
heyho, i think you must install virtualbox extension pack first, only with this (kernel-) modules installed you will be able to choose every resolution. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads personally, i think the workflow to get the extension running in Virtualbox is very complicated, you may want to try out VMware Player instead of Virtualbox: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation_player/12_0 it is free too. Edit: For OS X/Mac you have to download VMware Fusion: https://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/fusion-evaluation.html the version without "pro" is free
I do have the extension pack installed. In fact, I had a successful elementary installation of an earlier version. And I just installed Loki a couple of days ago, which is working out fine for me. So, without question, Freya was broken in this respect.
