Hello, I'm installing Elementary OS Freya 0.3.1 (elementaryos-stable-0.3.1-amd64.20150903.iso) on a Lenovo laptop with UEFI support and with a brand new Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB. I created a Live USB bootable image, booted from the image, configured my network, and did an install with an encrypted file system and encrypted home directory. I took the installation defaults for partitioning. The OS being installed is the only OS on the HD, no dual-boot. After installing and re-booting, I end up in the GRUB prompt. I cannot get past this. I've tried fixing it and using boot-repair, but it fails. The thread just below yours should mention a possible solution: https://elementaryforums.com/index.php?threads/grub-problem-after-freya-3-1-install.308/ the easiest way seems to search for the boot-repair purge grub option. I can feel with you, ive tried several hours to install elementary on an ultrabook too. EDIT: Affected users may install the old 0.3.0 and upgrade afterwards, this seems to be more easy then boot-repair 0.3.1 installation. Download 0.3.0 link via: Grub error (Minimal Bash line like)
Hi Shorny, thanks for the advice, but it didn't work. I tried running 'boot-repair --purge' but I still got the grub prompt. I even created a bootable USB of boot-repair and tried having it repair, but that failed as well. Any other suggestions? BTW, you can find the paste2 info here: http://paste2.org/Uj6Uz2ZY. Two more data points: 1) When I see the Grub command prompt after installing eOS, it says this at the top: GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9 So it appears I'm already running GRUB2. 2) As a test, I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with no problems using the same configuration I'm using with the eOS install (fully encrypted drive). Maybe eOS isn't ready for prime time yet? I really don't know why I'm having such problems when trying to install a new installation of an OS on a new SSD. I bought this SSD just for eOS and it isn't installing properly...this is a bummer...
Executing configfile (hd0,gpt1)/efi/grub/grub.cfg at the grub command prompt did get me further (past the grub prompt), but elementary OS is still not working for me. When I ran configfile, I saw the grub menu, but depending on what I chose, I either saw a bunch of text which looked like the OS tried to load but failed, or I saw a blank screen (which seemed to indicate the GUI was trying to be loaded but it failed somehow). With the blank screen I tried Ctl+Alt+F1 to see if I could get to a command prompt, but no luck. I tried installing eOS both with and without encryption. I've successfully installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with a fully encrypted drive on it (using just all defaults), but eOS (I've now tried about a dozen installs) just won't run. Any other suggestions?
I successfully install elementary OS *0.3.0* with the drive fully encrypted, so there's something wrong with the 0.3.1 install. I thought I'd be smart and upgrade from 0.3.0 to 0.3.1. The upgrade "succeeded", but now I cannot login. I get the login splash screen and after logging in, I get the splash screen again. I propose we rename 'Linux OS' to "Unproductive OS'.
