I'm trying to install an Epson WF-4720 all-in-one on my eOS Loki laptop. The laptop has an Intel i7 processor. The system will find the printer without any extra drivers, but a test-print resulted in only garbage, so I'm assuming I need a driver. I found this page where I found the Epson Printer Utility, wasn't really sure which file I needed but I more or less guessed I needed the epson-printer-utility-1.0.2-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm package for my system. I converted the rpm package to a deb package using the info on this page, using the --script parameter, which seemed to work, and used Eddy to install the deb package. Eddy reported success, but then I could not find the utility anywhere. I'm a n00b at Linux. Did I miss something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Heyho, you took the wrong package. Elementary is Based on Ubuntu, Ubuntu is based on Debian. Therefore you should download this package: epson-printer-utility_1.0.2-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb With ubuntu/debian its possible to install it with double click on the .Deb (GDebi Tool) like an .exe file. But elementary.... Is different, they removed GDebi... in this case, unfortunately. To install it you should do it via Terminal. Open terminal, run these commands: sudo apt install lsb cd ~/Downloads/ sudo dpkg -i epson-printer-utility_1.0.2-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb The first command is a package mentioned at the link you posted, you need it before installing the .deb file. The last dpkg command installs the deb file which includes the driver. If there are any error messages let us know.
Hi, Thanks for your response. I already installed lsb as part of my previous attempt, so I downloaded epson-printer-utility_1.0.2-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb and followed your instructions. The result is a relatively short response from the system: Selecting previously unselected package epson-printer-utility. (Reading database ... 256642 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to unpack epson-printer-utility_1.0.2-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb ... Unpacking epson-printer-utility (1.0.2-1lsb3.2) ... Setting up epson-printer-utility (1.0.2-1lsb3.2) ... Install Message > Start /usr/lib/epson-backend/setup to change setup. Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.23-0ubuntu10) ... After which I return to the prompt. Thanks to my n00bness I'm not sure if this is a good result. In any case, no Printer Utility or any new software has appeared in Applications. I cd't to /usr/lib/epson-backend/ as stated in the install message but there is no setup file to run. I tried to add the printer anyway. The printer was found by the system, but that was already the case before the driver install. Unfortunately, a test proved that nothing has changed, the printer is still printing lines like '@pjl set duplex is off' but not the document itself. Should I have completed any other steps (is there any other way to follow-up on that install message?), or am I doing something wrong? Thanks again for your help
Heyho, hmm I installed 3 years ago an epson driver for scanner, but there was the issue, the scanner was not detected by eOS. With installed .deb package, it was visible to add as scanner and working properly. According this german wiki you should search for the right deb package here: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/?OSC=LX Then they just say: "Nach der Installation der Treiber wird der Drucker als BX620FWD erkannt und kann wie gewohnt eingerichtet [2] werden." (After the driver installation, the printer will be detected as XXXXX (example name) and can be added as usual). But they also say, in the next sentence, the driver sometimes cannot print test-pages. Can you try to print a real page from LibeOffice?
Hey, Thanks again for your response. I had a look at the German Wiki page (I'm Dutch and live very close to the German border, mein Deutsch ist ziemlich amateurhaft, aber mit dieser Wiki kam ich schon klar ). The Epson download site is in fact the one where I found the driver. I wanted to pick the generic driver first, but the link to that page didn't work. On my previous try, I downloaded the package you recommended from there. I had not tried the scanner, though, so I did that on this run. Again, following the instructions in the package (I downloaded the 64bit version for Ubuntu 16.04), everything seemingly went fine. No errors. After installation a new icon showed up in Applications; Image scan. Unfortunately the program reports that no scanner device has been installed. I tried Simple scan, installed with eOS, but got the same message; no scanner. Since System Settings has no options for scanners, I cannot check there. Either I'm still overlooking something (quite possible) or eOS really doesn't like my printer/scanner. Since I still had the printer driver installed after last try, I did try and print a test page in LibreOffice Writer. Very plain, just 'This is just a test page'. Print preview looks fine, but the print itself came out same as before. A lot of lines about the printer settings but not the single line of text I was hoping for. I added a scan of the output (made on my Windows PC) to clarify. Once again, thank you for taking the time to help me!
