Hello everyone. Just signed up for this forum because I am a REAL newbie and I'm lost as a golf ball in high weeds. Just purchased a Brother MFC-J497DW. I found a page for downloading drivers. I followed the instructions of downloading the installation package but then all these Terminal commands were required. I have never done anything with Terminal other than be confused, since a friend always handled it for me with Team Viewer back when I used Ubuntu, and he isn't available anymore. I tried as best I could but have gotten absolutely nowhere working on it all afternoon. Would some patient soul out there please walk me through this?
I absolutely LOVE everything about Elementary and so far setting it up with a live disc and getting apps has been a breeze, but my 70 year old head just can't seem to wrap around this printer/Terminal problem.

    Thanks! Don

    I'm back.

It's been about a day now, and 11 of you have looked at my question but no one has posted a reply.
I have not been letting the dust settle on this end....I found the following site:

    https://tutorialforlinux.com/2014/1...other-printers-driver-on-elementary-os-linux/

I have been following the instructions to the "T" and get to the the instruction to enter: magcig@magcig-virtual-machine:~$
I enter....and it tells me there is no such command.

    (tap-tap on the monitor screen)

Would ANYONE please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Am I posting this on the wrong forum page? If so someone please direct me to the correct location.

....which is preferable to telling me where to go.... :)

    Thanks in advance to somebody.....Don

    Success!

After two days of frustration, I found this link:

    https://tutorialforlinux.com/2019/0...ver-ubuntu-19-04-how-to-download-and-install/

I followed it, and BINGO I have the printer up and running.

I have to imagine that the pages I listed before had some error in the Terminal instructions that blocked progress.

I am posting this because someone may have a similar problem and want to know a link that will help with Brother printers.

And in closing, may an old educator make a small suggestion?

I notice on this "Newbie" page that there have been lots of questions asked, and LOTS of views, but very few replies.

Now it would seem to me that a page for questions from newcomers should be watched over by those most knowledgeable about Elementary OS so they might offer some direction, advice, and instruction to those most in need of help.

Or perhaps, as I mentioned above, those questions to be directed to a different thread.

I have been on many different forums from cars to amateur radio, and people were always willing to jump in and help deliver advice personally or at least direct them to a different area for information.

Just my 2 cents, and again.....I'm learning....and I love Elementary OS!

    Have a great day everyone!

    Don
