I have installed Loki on my brand new Gigabyte Sabre 17, replacing windows 10 completely. It boots, I log in to either my own account or the guest account, the wallpaper comes up and then ... nothing, No taskbar, no dock. CTL-ALT-Fx does not get me to a TTY and after a while the mouse cursor disappears too. Any ideas? Update: I got it working by going into the BIOS and disabling everything in sight. Would be nice to know just what the problem was, though.
Hey it sounds like a video setting. I would go through those one by one until you find the culprit. Gigabyte Sabre is a nice laptop! I am assuming it has a video card so maybe you was/wasn't making use of it before you changed BIOS settings.
I did just that, testing the BIOS settings one at a time. For future reference, the one to switch off is "3d graphics acceleration". That probably means I am running on the Intel rather than the Nvidia GPU, but that's OK, I'm not a gamer.
Ahhh I thought it might be that one! Yes it seemed like you were not using the correct drivers for your nvidia GPU. Maybe look at changing over to your nvidia GPU with correct nvidia drivers as it would be a shame to not make use of your powerful GPU!
I'm experiencing an identical issue. Laptop booted and worked without issue for the first few days, but now when I boot, every other boot (it seems) the login process will hang at the wallpaper after entering my password. No way to restart except for a hard shut down. I'm on an Acer Aspire 4830t with integrated Intel graphics. Is there a way to manually force an update for that chipset? Edit: I followed this guide to update my video drivers. I've rebooted twice since then and everything seems fine. I'll update this thread in a few days with my findings. http://elementary208.blogspot.com/2017/02/updating-intel-graphics-drivers-in.html
