Hi Dan, I am not sure what do you mean by "..authenticate in order to receive updates and add new apps" but if you have a persistent installation, you have been probably prompted to create an account and a password during the install. That is the password you will need to use when being prompted if you want to install updates and apps. It also works if you want to do any installation in the terminal through sudo. Ex: sudo apt-get install.....
