    Hello,

I've really been enjoying elementary OS and have tried numerous potential remedies to the freezing issue. It seems to happen at random times unrelated to the processor or memory load. This is my full time laptop for work and I really love the OS but living with the freezing is becoming a challenge.

    So far I've,

    - Upgraded to kernal 4.12 (seems to slightly improved with less freezing).

    - changed grub to include
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_idle.max_cstate=1"

    - updated to the latest intel microcode

My system is an i5-5300u with 8gb ram. I basically just use chrome but sometime play openra which also randomly will freeze.

These posts seems to have some idea's about fixing the bug: https://askubuntu.com/questions/749349/how-to-set-intel-idle-max-cstate-1

Also, here is a screen shot regarding some errors related to the freezing.

Thank you in advance for suggestions / ideas.

I installed a fresh copy and pretty much did everything suggested in the posts above but sadly the freezing is still happening.
It really drives me nuts :) . It freezes partially as in I can move my mouse around but I cannot click on any menus. It simply doesn't do anything. If I leave it alone for ...10 mins(approx), it starts working again. Very moody :)

Is yours playing nice or is there anything else one can do to stop it from freezing?

It sounds like we have two different issues since mine completely freeze and must be hard reset. Mine is still acting up.

    Thank you for replying.

I believe you are right. My issue seems to be more like the one here: https://elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/7680/wingpanel-not-responding-loki

Did what they suggested there but didn't seem to help. Pkill comes to my rescue now and then :p
I do not quite know what to do to prevent it as it seems to be more related to the core programming than anything.
I have an NVIDIA and I'm on the official driver, I am going to try the opensource driver for a change. Will keep digging

Sorry for spamming your thread :)

Freezing seems unfortunate as I don't have these issues often except occasional when trying to resume from suspend. I blame that on the ubuntu 4.10 related kernel because the exact same troubles happened under Ubuntu as well.

What kernel are you all currently using? With all the meltdown stuff recent updates have given me 4.13... and I know a bunch of good updates have happened between 4.10 and 4.13... any luck since getting on the fresh kernel?

I was having quick hangups when doing simple tasks like opening a new tab in chrome or terminal, or opening a video. Weirdly, removing wingpanel-indicator-power resolved the issue.

    sudo apt-get remove wingpanel-indicator-power
