I just installed Loki and after installation when I boot up all I have is a black screen and a mouse pointer. I can move the cursor around but the screen remains black. When I hold down the power button to reboot the system the eOs logo appears on the screen before shutdown.

I tried reinstalling a second time leaving install 3rd party drivers and updates unchecked but I still have the same result unfortunately.

I have a pretty old graphics card now an AMD HD 5770 and the open source display drivers are usually fine on Linux with this card.

When boot up, hold <shift> down, then you will be prompt with list, press <e>.

In linux line after quiet splash add nomodeset and radeon.modeset=0

    ctrl+x to boot

    Thanks for the response.

I tried as you suggested but after pressing ctrl+X to boot, the elementary logo appeared in a lower resolution and then I was back at a black screen with a mouse cursor again. I tried another reboot and I still got the black screen, only the resolution was back to 1080p?

I found that replacing "no splash" with "radeon.modeset=1" and leaving the computer for around 10 minutes the log in screen would eventually appear after waking the computer from sleep mode.
The resolution was in full HD when using modeset=1.

The problem is confounded by the fact that wingpanel keeps crashing and the web browser freezes when opening up settings. It seems very slow to open up some programs even though graphics performance is solid and smooth.

I just tried Feren OS and I couldn't even install it because I have the exact same issue but within the live CD itself, I believe it uses the same kernel as Loki as its based on Mint 18

I've had some progress getting eOs to boot normally without the black screen.
I just enabled auto login at boot which prevents the blackout at the log in screen and takes me straight to a visible desktop. I no longer have to edit advanced boot settings either. After system updates wingpanel is now mostly functioning correctly but it still can randomly lock up from time to time.

If anyone else is having this issue I would suggest they try selecting auto login during install process.

    Same problem happening here.

    Loki 0.4.1 on a Acer 5750g Laptop.

The funny thing is if my laptop is plugged to the AC all is fine, it starts normally, but if I start my laptop without plugging it, the black screen + cursor happens. plugging it again solves the problem with no reboot needed at all, just connecting the AC adaptor.

I have an HP, Elitebook 745 g5, running ryzen U2500, with 8 gb ram and 256 gb hdd, it tries to boot, but stays on a gray screen with a cursor, a round cursor, and I can move the cursor, but nothing happens, I tried all options on the Bios and all is the same, legacy enable. Safe boot disable, legacy disable, safe boot disable, legacy disable and safe boot enable, and all the time same results, is there an issue with AMD? Or there is something that I am missing with my bios? , I tried what you said and did not worked
